When backup generators are installed it is common to use manual four pole changes over switch or contactor to transfer the load from the mains to generator. This results in neutral- earth reference being lost during the transition.
Inherent problems with this method are:
Phase voltage can rise alarmingly and any sensitive single phase loads could be damaged
Switching delays or improper contact (human errors) can course UPS depletion and sensitive IT equipment outage.
Arching, a condition where the contactor’s terminal keeps burning out, shortens the life span of the manual changeover switch system.
Mitigation of the above and many more are the advantages of introducing an ATS automatic transfer switching systems.
